I was in a delightful sleep the other night, one of those deep peaceful sleeps I always look forward to when I finally lay my head down on the pillow at night. A deep sleep doesn't come real often for me, I'm a light sleeper, but when it does, it's wonderful!
As I was peacefully counting zzzzs in dreamland, I was awakened by a loud unrelenting, irritating noise! To my shock I realized it was a very loud bird! A Mockingbird to be exact. My husband got out of bed and closed the window, something I have never seen him do! He can sleep through anything!
How could one of God's creatures be so irritating, I thought, as I turned over and tried to go back to sleep. I couldn't imagine why this bird was chirping away in the middle of the night, and then I would find, all day as well! My Dad and I were joking about it the next day, and he said I should have my husband go get a shotgun... he wasn't serious, of course... but I had to chuckle at his humor.
It struck me that the Mockingbird was simply doing what it was created to do... and yet I don't always bring honor to God, as I was created to do! It made me be feel a little less imposed upon by the Mockingbird when that thought popped into my head...
There's a beautiful quote I happened to see after my "sounds in the night" experience that made me think that Mockingbird might have been a little message from God...
"Faith is the bird that sings when the dawn is still dark"... Tagore.
